Eww, what is that smell?

sewage on restaurant floor What is that smell?

Most homeowners and business owners may not realize that they are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their house or sewer lateral – the pipeline between the city sanitary sewer main, usually located under the street, and the building.

The sewer lateral is owned and maintained by the property owner including any part that may extend into the street or public right of way. A cracked or deteriorated lateral or one filled with tree roots can allow groundwater to seep into the system, contributing to the possible sewer backup problems.

Occasionally, the city sewer or municipal drainage system overflows and sends waste water back through the sewage pipe and into your home. An overflow can occur for a number of different reasons, including cracks in the pipe, a surcharge caused by large snowmelt or heavy rains, or a blockage caused by tree roots or plumbing system deterioration, and more.

However, it can also be caused by a blockage in your home’s or business own plumbing system due to a failed sump pump, hair clogs, grease clogs, or any other physical obstruction in the pipes.

If you experience call SERVPRO and we can help 24/7/365.
